We started with a gap on a shelf.
Not a metaphorical one — an actual four-inch gap between a battered paperback and a hardcover, the kind every bookshelf has. Too small for another book. Too big to ignore. And every lamp we found to fill it was either a desk lamp that swallowed half the shelf, or a string of fairy lights that made a library look like a dorm room.
So we went looking for something better: light that belonged inside the bookcase rather than shining at it.
What we make Hearth & Haunt makes small lit objects for reading spaces. Cordless, warm-toned, quiet. Things that look like they were already there when you moved in — like a detail from an old library that somehow followed you home.
Our first piece is the Ghost Bookshelf Lantern: a slim bracket that slides between your books and hangs a small, softly glowing ghost above the spines. It reads its own book. It doesn't need an outlet. It keeps the light low enough that nobody else in the house has to know you're still awake.
Cozy, not creepy We sit at the seam between two things people usually keep apart — the warmth of a hearth and the pleasure of being slightly haunted. Autumn evenings. Old paper. Gothic novels read under a blanket. A ghost that's more company than threat. Nothing we make is designed to scare you. It's designed to make 11pm feel like the best part of the day.
How we work We're a small operation, which we think is the point. Every product gets chosen because we wanted it on our own shelves first — not because a trend report said so. We answer our own emails, usually within a day. And if something we send you doesn't earn its spot on your shelf, we take it back within 30 nights, no explanation required.
Where we're headed The ghost is the first of a series we're calling Shelf Companions — small lit residents for the spaces between your books. A raven. A black cat.
